Std: IV

Subject: English

Section A (Reading Comprehension)

Q.I.                    Read the following passage carefully.

Sheila loved to hear her older sister, Emma,
play the piano. Listening to the notes and

watching Emma’s fingers press the keys

made Sheila want to play the piano too.

Sheila was sure she could learn to play even

though she was a few years younger, so

asked her mother, “Mom, can I start taking

piano lessons?”

“Sheila, as long as you understand that you

have to practise every day, you can take

piano lessons,” her mom said.

Sheila was so excited. She could not wait to play ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’,

one of her favourite songs. In no time, she thought, she would play as well as

Emma!

Sheila was excited and nervous for her first piano lesson. When she got there,

she was surprised; her teacher had flashcards and a book for her. Emma just had

music notes in her piano books. Sheila did not know there were so many other

things to know about the piano first.

She had to learn each of the notes, or the sounds, that the piano makes. Then,

she had to learn which key on the piano made each note. Her teacher showed

her everything she had to practice and learn before the next lesson. During that

first lesson, Sheila never even got to touch a key on the piano.

“Don’t people get to play the piano at piano lessons?” she wondered.

The next day, when Sheila got home from school, she ate her snacks fast and

started to run outside.

“Where are you going?” her mom asked.

“Outside to play ball,” Sheila said. “Bye mom!”

“Not so fast, you must study your piano flashcards,” her mom said. “Then, you

can play.”

India covering 8, 38,200 sq. km.

The river rises in the western Himalayas in the

Indian state of Uttarakhand, and flows south and

east through the Gangetic Plain of North India into

Bangladesh, where it empties into the Bay of

Bengal.

It has a number of tributaries like Gomti, Ghaghara,

Gandaki, Kosi, Yamuna, Son, and Damodar. The

Ganga is a perennial river as water is available throughout the year. The water

supply of the Ganga system depends partly on the rains brought by the monsoon

winds from July to October. Melting Himalayan snow in the hot season, from April

to June, also contribute to the water supply.

The river has formed one of the most fertile flood plains of the world. The water of

the river is widely used for agricultural purposes. We get golden crops from the

fertile lands on its banks. Irrigation has increased the production of food and cash

crops such as wheat, sugarcane, cotton and oilseeds.

The Ganga has been made into a national waterway. It is navigable up to

Haridwar. Our Government has started projects for the wider usage of the water.

This would bring enormous prosperity and economic development in our country.

Many people go on pilgrimages to holy sites along the Ganga, especially at the

point where it merges with other rivers.
